Rute - Hiking Trails

Sierra de Rute Trail

This is a beautiful hiking trail of about eight kilometers (5 miles) and of medium difficulty. Running through the Sierra de Rute, the trail offers some wonderful views over the reservoir of Iznájar, to the Sierra Nevada, to the Torcal de Antequera rock formation and other landscapes in the south of Andalusia.

El Pinar de Rute Trail

This five-kilometer (3-mile) trail leads past an ADEBO donkey sanctuary (Asociación para la Defensa del Borrico), where they are dedicated to the conservation of the Cordobesian giant donkey breed, which is considered the oldest donkey breed in Europe. The route continues to the highest points of the Sierra de Rute mountain range, the Cerro del Canuto with a Moorish watchtower at an altitude of 1,041 meters and the Sierra Alta (1,325 m).

Trail to the Millennial Oak (Sendero de la Encina Milenaria)

The so-called Millennial Oak, one of the most famous trees of Andalusia, can be hiked from two starting points: the respective trails start in Llanos de Don Juan and in Lucena. The destination, a unique centuries-old holm oak (Quercus ilex), has been declared a natural monument by the Andalusian regional administration. In a competition dedicated to electing the tree of Spain, this oak was ranked third.

Pamplinar Trail

This hiking trail begins in the very south of the town of Rute, directly behind the former Hotel María Luisa. It runs for almost four kilometers (2.5 miles) through olive groves and goes almost to the bank of the Iznájar reservoir. On the way there are beautiful views of the artificial lake. Various options are available for the way to return.
