Luque - Church La Asunción

The parish church of La Asunción is, together with the neighboring fortification, a building that shapes the silhouette of Luque. In addition to the castle, it is the most important sight in town. The church dates from the second half of the 16th century. It was built in the style of the so-called Fernandine churches.

Its construction is a direct consequence of the historical development of the region. After Luque was no longer directly in the border area to the Nasrid Empire of Granada, the town saw a strong growth in population. The original church of Santa Maria was no longer able to accommodate the ever increasing number of believers, so the decision was made to build a new parish church.

Therefore in 1557, Bishop Cristóbal de Rojas y Sandoval commissioned the architect Hernán Ruiz II of Cordoba to build a new and larger church in the exposed location on the former city wall directly below the medieval castle.

The spacious three-aisle building without a transept has been inviting locals to worship since then, but visitors also appreciate this architectural gem.
