Luque - Medieval Castle
The medieval Hisn Lukk castle is one of the the main attractions of Luque and the neighboring area. As one of numerous castles built on rugged cliffs in Moorish times which can be found anywhere in Andalusia, the fortress towers above the town and has shaped its silhouette for centuries. The stronghold dates from the 9th century, the final phase of the Emirate of Cordoba.
The bastion, impregnable from three sides, was conquered and developed into a strategically important stronghold in 1240 under the aegis of King Ferdinand III. It was destined to secure the border area between the Christian kingdoms of Castile and the Nasrid empire of Granada for more than a century. Most parts of the structure that can be seen today date from this time.
The fortress is dominated by two massive towers that once, along with three sections of the castle wall protected the interior area from enemies. Access is provided by a gate that was equipped with a drawbridge at the time.
The Luque fortress complex is currently being restored, so it is not possible to visit its interior parts.
