Cordoba Zoo
The Cordoba Zoo is a perfect place to learn more about the Andalusian wildlife. Visitors may view a collection of animals that live in southern Spain, Africa and elsewhere.
Opened in 1968, the Cordoba zoo belongs to the oldest parks of this kind in Spain. Founded with the intention to display wild animals to the public, today the zoo aims at preserving endangered species, researching peculiar habits of wildlife and to sensitizing the general public to certain environmental aspects.
Therefore, the zoo underwent an extensive remodeling at the beginning of the 21st century. After six years of reconstruction paying attention to species-appropriate aspects, the zoo reopened in September 2006. Today the park covers an area of about six hectares (roughly 15 acres) and is divided into various zones modeled according to different wildlife habitats. In the first line, this goes for monkeys, bears, big cats, ungulates, nutrias and hippos.
The Cordoba zoo is home to about 300 animals of 78 species, primarily mammals and birds. Since remodling of the zoo, it has been the new home to a pair of polar lynxes, a wolf pack, lions, zebras, ostriches and others.
Along with the adjacent botanical garden, the scrubland along the river, the so-called kid’s city and the Royal Fortress gardens, the zoo forms a large “green lung” amidst the city.
