Santo Domingo Pilgrimage 2020
One of the events that famous the famous Mayo Cordobés is the Romeria de Santo Domingo de Scala Coeli, or Santo Domingo Pilgrimage. In 2020 it will take place a bit early, namely on Sunday, 19 April 2020.
From the city center of Cordoba, a dozen decorated carriages make their way to the sanctuary in the early morning hours.
Accompanied by hundreds of horseback riders and pilgrims who do the pilgrimage walking, the parade leaves the República Argentina Avenue. Popular songs, typical music and the applause of the audience along the streets are constant companions on their way through the city to the sanctuary.
The sanctuary and actual destination point of the pilgrimage is located in the in the Sierra de Córdoba mountains, about five kilometers (three miles) from the city. It was founded in the 15th century by San Álvaro de Córdoba. San Álvaro is the patron saint of the local Holy Week Brotherhoods (Hermandades y Cofradías de la Semana Santa).
The pilgrimage, which is celebrated in his honor, has a tradition of more than five hundred years. It is organized by the local Peñas Association in cooperation with the City of Córdoba.
After the pilgrims' arrival at the sanctuary, a flower sacrifice is made and a mass is celebrated. There is also a small procession in honor of the saint. Afterwards, the gathered people celebrate a day of socializing with music, dance, food and wine within the sanctuary and in the surrounding area.
This year the Santo Domingo Pilgrimage coincides with the traditional Bean Fest that takes place at the hermitage “Ermitas de Córdoba”.
