Mercado de Sánchez Peña (Market Hall)

Located at the south side of Cordoba’s emblematic Corredera Square, this building breaks through the unique homogeneous local architecture. Mercado de Sánchez Peña was built before the square received its current appearance in the 17th century.

Already constructed in 1583 on the mayor’s order, the building served as town hall and municipal jail house. Later, in the 19th century, local business man José Sánchez Peña bought the premises in order to conduct a hat and textile factory. While the workers had their dwelling on the upper floor, the ground floor was used as factory shed.

After the manufactory had been closed, the building became home to local businesses. In 1887 Mercado de Sánchez Peña opened its doors as it is known in these days. As many as 87 stalls provided goods to the public.

Even today the market hall on the ground floor, known as Mercado de la Corredera, is busy with shoppers flocking in for fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables and many other items.
