Roman Mausoleum (Mausoleo romano)

This mausoleum is another evidence for Roman colonization of the area in ancient times. It is loacted in a park known as Victoria Gardens (Jardines de la Victoria), adjacent to where the Roman city gate Porta Principalis Sinistra once was found.

After the remains of the mausoleum had been descovered in 1993, it was rebuilt after original contruction plans. The primary cylindrical structure dates from the first century of our time. Actually, there were several mausoleums which then where located outside the city limits according to the ancient death cult custom.

Part of the complex is a second mausoleum, giving a better understanding of the dimension of this Roman facility. Between both mausoleums, the excavated remains of what once was the Roman Cordoba-to-Seville route are visible.
