Las Ermitas de Córdoba (Cordoba Hermitage)
The deserted site of Our Lady from Belén, referred to as the Cordoba Hermitage by Cordobans, is an enchanting place above the city. Offering delightful tranquility and an outstanding panoramic view of the city and the Guadalquivir Valley, this lovely spot is worth a trip.
Founded in the 17th century by a group of monks intended to dedicate their lives solely to the Lord, even today this place gives visitors a glimpse of how abstinent and full of privation their lives used to be.
The hermitage is built up of 13 tiny dwellings. Some of them are still inhabited by a group of brothers of the order of the discalced Carmelites. This area is not accessible to the public.
Instead visitors can follow a path shadowed by cypresses providing access to a beautiful chapel. This little church is lavishly ornamented. As the entire site sits on a slope of the Cordoba Mountains, visitors can enjoy splendid vistas from any place there.
Anyway, probably the most perfect view of Cordoba and the entire valley can be enjoyed from the dedicated observation platform which is overlooked by a giant Jesus statue.
The Cordoba hermitage is about 15 street kilometers (less than ten miles) away from the city. Is is accessible by a narrow steep road winding through the mountains. Persons with good physical condition can use a short, but extremely steep hiking trail from El Brillante neighborhood. Offering beautiful vistas along the way, this three kilometer (two mile) trail is an excellent option for hiking enthusiasts.
