Capilla de San Bartolomé (Saint Bartholomew Chapel)
This chapel is another gem amongst Cordoba’s churches and chapels.
In the end of the 13th century, on the occasion of the expulsion and conversion to Christianity of the Jewish population, the St. Bartholomew parish was established. To be able to hold church services, construction of the tiny St. Bartholomew Church begun in the end of the 14th century, but remained unfinished. Instead a funerary chapel was built, which is today known as Capilla de San Bartolomé. Along with the Royal Chapel, harbored by the Mezquita Cathedral, and the synagogue, this chapel is an impressive example of local Mudéjar architecture.
The term Mudéjar is derived from the Arab word mudaÿÿan, which has the meaning of “tamed” and was used for the Moorish population that remained in Spain after the Christians had recaptured the Iberian peninsula. Firstly seen in the 12th century, Mudéjar architecture is unique in the world.
The wonderful blend of Christian structure and Arab decoration appears at the first sight. Worth mentioning elements are the tiled pedestal, the geometric forms, the plastering and the Gothic vaulted ceiling.
Protected as a notable cultural asset in 1931, Capilla de San Bartolomé is found adjacent to former Hospital del Cardenal Salazar. The latter was established in the early 18th century and is home to the philosophic faculty of Cordoba’s university today.
