The origins of Cordoba’s and Andalusia’s traditional courtyards or Patios (so called Patio Andaluz) go back to the oriental culture that played a substantial role in Spain when Arabs ruled the nation in ancient times.
Presumably, the special characteristics of the Patio Andaluz emerged at times of the Caliphate of Cordoba. Later, under rule of the dynasties of the Abbadids, Almoravids and Almohads, several decorative details were added. However, the general structure of the patio has been virtually unchanged since the 11th century.
