Cuevas Romanas (Roman Quarries)

Just five or so minutes from Cordoba, on the foothills of the Sierra Morena Mountains, visitors can explore what Romans left in order to build their famous temples and palaces - the ancient Roman quarries, or Roman caves. If you want to follow the Roman traces that can be found anywhere in the region, you should not miss this site.

Uncovered in 1929, these quarries are regarded as one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the area in modern times. A system of man-made caves and tunnels which is only partly excavated, is evidence of the ancient efforts conducted to win a large amount of sandstone material for prestigious buildings in ancient Cordoba and beyond.

The quarries are located on the estate of the Cuevas Romanas restaurant.
