Cultural Capital 2016 Campaign
2016 marks the year when a Spanish city will once again hold the title of European Capital of Culture. 15 cities, including Cordoba, presented their bids in Madrid in September 2010.
True to the motto “Córdoba, Europa: El futuro tiene raíces” (Cordoba, Europe: The future has roots), the city of Cordoba presented its campaign, convinced that the city - former Colonia Patricia and former capital of al-Andalus and place of peaceful coexistence of various cultures - is able to adhere to the values the motto stands for. The city is doing all it can to live these values.
Along with the cities of Burgos, Las Palmas, San Sebastián, Segovia and Zaragoza, Cordoba is one of the few cities that are still in the running.
Since it was founded in 2002, the Municipal Office for the Campaign has been constantly working to prepare the city for taking the title. It initiated an endorsement program, which was joined by more than 135,000 individuals, businesses and institutions to date.
Also, the organizations of the city created an extensive cultural program with nationally and even internationally noted events, including the International Guitar Festival and the National Flamenco Contest. Other initiatives such as the annual Flamenco Night, Cosmopoética, Eutopía or Animacor are adding to the efforts and attracting a wide audience.
Cordoba has one of the largest old towns of Europe and is part of the world’s cultural heritage. Over the next years, almost 280 million euros will be invested here to create as many as 35 new cultural spots. Worth mentioning are the new Fosforito Flamenco Center, the extension of the Archaeological Museum, the Casa Mudéjar as the proposed seat of the Arabian House and the International Institute of Islamic Science, the Góngora Theater and the extensive remodeling of the Royal Stables and Royal Fortress area.
Further projects are intended along the Guadalquivir River, including the congress center and the new Museum of Fine Art.
Finally, various cultural sites are projected in Cordoba’s neighborhoods supplementing the existing network of 20 community centers. Planned are two libraries, remodeling and extension of the Axerquía open air theater and the school of art Escuela de Artes y Cultura Popular.
Apart from current and future cultural offerings, Cordoba can mention its excellent road, highspeed rail and air connection to the rest of Andalusia, Spain and Europe. Thus, the city is well-prepared to meet the 2016 challenge.
