Almedinilla
Almedinilla is a small emblematic town in the very southeast of the province of Cordoba. 110 kilometers (70 miles) away from the capital city, the town is found in the heart of rural Andalusia, adjacent to the boundaries of Granada and Jaen provinces. The town is perfect for a journey back in time, understanding local culture and customs and enjoying the beauty of the countryside.
The town with a population of 2500 has origins going back to the middle Old Stone Age. Major historic evidence dates back to 7th to 2nd centuries BC, when this place was an Iberian settlement known as Cerro de la Cruz.
Almedinilla, along with five more villages belonging to the town, is embedded within a beautiful rural environment. Fruitful olive groves are melting with Mediterranean mountain forest. The scenery is dotted with whitewashed houses communicating a postcard-perfect idyll.
There are numerous rural guest houses providing good accommodation, as well as restaurants and taverns serving traditional local cuisine.
Almedinilla is recognized for its “fluid gold”. The locally produced olive oil is known as ranging among the world’s best.
A project known as “Ecomuseo Río Caicena” is dedicated to promoting the town touristically and taking visitors to a journey back in time.
Located between the towns of Priego de Córdoba and Alcalá la Real, the town is found in the heart of Sierras Subbéticas natural park. It is part of the famous Bética Romana route as well as of the Villas Romanas de Hispania network. Along with the villages of Monturque and Puente Genil, since 2014 visitors here have been able to follow the traces of the Romans and discovering their treasures (Tesoros Romanos del Sur de Córdoba - Roman treasures in the south of Cordoba).
Visiting local monuments, archaeological sites, museums and other attractions, a stroll through postcard-perfect alleys, a talk with inhabitants – all this gives a perfect opportunity of having a depp insight in history and culture of Almedinilla.
Monuments, museums, archaeological sites
Roman Mansion “El Ruedo”
Archaeological site showing a former mansion, built in the first century of our time and used until the seventh century. The excavation is known as one of the best findings of this kind througout the Iberian peninsula. Remarkable are the height of the preserved walls and the variety of architectural elements, including wall paintings, mosaics and floors. Not to mention the sculpture of Hypnos or Somnus respectively, the God of Sleep, which was uncovered here and is displayed in the museum of history of Almedinilla.
Iberian Settlement “El Cerro de la Cruz”
This protected excavation dates from the third to secont century BC and is one of the few settlements of this time that had been uncovered in Andalusia.
Museum of history
Harbored by a former oil mill, this museum has three halls stretching over three stories. Dedicated to showing the process of oil making, as well as depicting the lives of native Iberians and Romans.

Museo del Campesinado (Agricultural workers’ museum)
Das Landarbeitermuseum zeigt eine Sammlung an Gegenständen, die Aufschluss über die Schwierigkeiten geben, eigenen Grundbesitz seitens der Landarbeiter zu erwerben sowie ihren diesbezüglichen Kampf. Ein Großteil der Ausstellung befasst sich insbesondere mit der Zeit des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges (1936-1939), als Almedinilla infolge der kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen zweigeteilt war.
Hiking path “Salto del Caballo”
In den Ausläufern der Sierra de Albayate beginnt eine Wanderroute, die Spaziergänger und Naturliebhaber bis zu einem spektakulären Wasserfall bringt, der landläufig als Salto del Caballo bekannt ist. Der entlang des Flusses Caicena verlaufende Pfad ist ein Viehtriebweg, der in römischer Zeit eine Straße war. Als Ausgangspunkt der 1,4 Kilometer langen Route bietet sich das Historische Museum als auch die unter der Bezeichnung "La Veguilla" bekannte Brücke an, die sich an der Landstraße nach Brácana befindet.
Hiking path “Tierras altas del caicena”
Dieser 1,2 km lange Wanderweg ist der damalige Verbindungsweg von Brácana, einem der fünf Dörfer, die zu Almedinilla gehören, zum Zentrum der Verwaltungsgemeinschaft. Ausgangspunkt der Route ist das Historische Museum, von dem aus der Pfad bis zum Gipfel des Berges Cerro de la cruz ansteigt und den Wanderer mit einer einzigartigen Aussicht über Almedinilla und die umliegenden Ortschaften belohnt.

Torre del Reloj (Clock tower)
Der Uhrenturm befindet sich an der Plaza de la Constitución de Almedinilla in der Nachbarschaft des Rathauses. Zu Zeiten der zweiten Spanischen Republik wurde der Turm 1934 errichtet.
Coliseo de Almedinilla
Dieses neu errichtete Mehrzweckgebäude ist Austragungsort zahlreicher kultureller Veranstaltungen. Ein besonderes Highlight ist die Gestaltung des Coliseos für die Ausrichtung der Römischen Bankette, die alljährlich im Rahmen der Festveranstaltung FESTUM stattfinden.
