The Almodovar Castle, or Castillo de Almodóvar, sits above the town of Almodovar, on top of a sheer-walled monolith. Therefore, it cannot only be seen from large distance, but offers spectacular vistas over the entire Guadalquivir Valley.

The castle’s origins date back to Roman times. The actual construction, however, was built by the Arabs in 760. Under the rule of Fernando III it came to the Christians in 1240, and under Pedro I and Enrique II it even served as royal residence. Later the fortress was handed to the knightly order of Calatrava and then to the order of Santiago. Finally, in 1903 the Earl of Torralva, then the owner, began restoring the castle. These efforts lasted until 1936. Therefore, the historic structure is amazingly well-preserved even today.

All times the Castillo was important for the city of Cordoba, since its strategic location contributed to assuring the city’s security. Located above the Guadalquivir, which was navigable until Cordoba at ancient times, the castle could control the traffic on the river.

Castillo del Almodóvar has a total of nine massive towers. The two largest ones, the Donjon (
la torre del Homenaje) and the School Tower (la torre de la Escuela), are located at northern and southern edges and can be ascended. From top of the towers, visitors can enjoy spectacular secenic views.

The castle is open year round with exception of December, 25 and January, 1. On weekends and holidays there is no midday break. On wednesdays, citizens of the European Union enjoy free admission.

Visitors may tour the castle on their own account or attend a guided tour. An unforgettable experience is attending one of the knight’s banquets that are offered on weekends.
